The story of “Nián” (年獸)

This is my homework. My language partner finally knows why Chinese use red a lot!

係呀,所謂「功課」就係咁小兒科!不過瑞典女生不打算放過我,她要求我下次不要只翻譯中文資料,而要先消化文章意思,再用自己的文字寫成撮要,再把撮要寫成英文!Oh no!我上了賊船!

Happy Chinese New Year! Do you know in Chinese fairy story, “Year” was a monster, named “Nián”. It was cruel and terrible; people believed that it ate people in the last night of the year.

Monster “
Nián” was afraid of red, light and crowd, so Chinese posted red stickers on the doors, lit candles overnight and let off firecrackers. By then, Monster Nián” couldn’t eat people. People said “Cheers” to each other, to celebrate Monster Nián” was away! A new year started!!!

--> Monster Nián” feared firecrackers.

People lit candles for the whole night.
