Paul and Kate had dinner together as usual, just like past 60 years. Paul put 3 spoons of sugar into Kate’s coffee. He knew Kate loved sweet. Kate cut the steak into small pieces. She knew Paul’s teeth weren’t strong.
It was a simple night, just like past 60 years; it wasn’t, because it was their 60th wedding anniversary.
“Do you remember what you said when we were kids?” Kate asked.
Paul smiled, and said “of course. I met you when I was five. You were lovely, I wished you could be my wife someday.” Paul held Kate’s hand, looked at her eyes, “One day, I hugged you with a kiss and said “I will not leave you alone, no matter what, I promise.” Is that right?”
“Yes, I thought it was just a joke, because we were kids! But you promised me again when you proposed marriage to me at the age of 20. I knew you took it seriously.”
“I never forgot my promise.”
“No, you did break the promise once. You left me alone the year we got married.”
“Honey, you know, I couldn’t say no, because I had to protect our country! Do you know how sad I was when I left you?”
“I was sad too. I thought of you every minute and second.”
“I missed you days and nights. You were my lifeboat when I was in the battlefield. There was full of dead bodies. I thought I would never see you again. But I reminded myself to be strong everyday, because I had to keep my promise.”
“Yes, you did. You came home after 5 years, even though you lost one leg.” Kate kissed her husband.
“I will not leave you alone, no matter what, I promise.”
“I will not leave you either”, Kate hugged Paul, just like he did when they were young, “no matter you’re strong or weak, I’ll be there, I promise.”
They kissed each other, just like the day they were young.
